Calculating Electricity Bills

1. Determine the Electricity Tariff Class

Firstly, you need to determine the electricity tariff class applied to your house. Each house has different tariff classes depending on the power usage and the region of residence. These tariff classes usually consist of several categories, such as R-1 (450 VA), R-1/RTM (900 VA), R-2 (1300 VA), R-3 (2200 VA), and so on. Information about the tariff class is usually found on the electricity bill or can be confirmed directly with the electricity service provider.

2. Record the Power of All Electronic Devices

The next step is to record the power (wattage) of all electronic devices in your house. Electronic devices usually have labels indicating their power consumption, or this information can be found in user manuals or product packaging. Make sure to record the power consumption of each device in watts.

3. Calculate the Usage Time of Electronic Devices

After listing the devices along with their power consumption, you need to calculate the total power used based on the usage time. For example, if you use a 100-watt bulb for 5 hours a day, then the total power consumption is 100 watts x 5 hours = 500 watt-hours per day. Perform similar calculations for all electronic devices used in one month.

4. Consider the Electricity Tariff per kWh

The State Electricity Company (PLN) has set the basic electricity tariff per kWh for each customer class. Below is the complete list of electricity tariffs for each customer class applicable in March 2024.

  • Electricity tariff for class R-1/TR with power limit 900 VA-RTM, Rp 1,352.00 per kWh.
  • Electricity tariff for class R-1/TR with power limit 1,300 VA, Rp 1,444.70 per kWh.
  • Electricity tariff for class R-1/TR with power limit 2,200 VA, Rp 1,444.70 per kWh.
  • Electricity tariff for class R-2/TR with power limit 3,500 VA to 5,500 VA, Rp 1,699.53 per kWh.
  • Electricity tariff for class R-3/TR with power limit 6,600 VA and above, Rp 1,699.53 per kWh.
  • Electricity tariff for class B-2/TR with power limit 6,600 VA to 200 kVA, 1,444.70 per kWh.
  • Electricity tariff for class B-3/TM with power limit above 200 kVA, Rp 1,114.74 per kWh.
  • Electricity tariff for class I-3/TM with power limit above 200 kVA, Rp 1,114.74 per kWh.
  • Electricity tariff for class I-4/TT with power limit 30,000 kVA and above, Rp 996.74 per kWh.
  • Electricity tariff for class P-1/TR with power limit 6,600 VA to 200 kVA, Rp 1,699.53 per kWh.
  • Electricity tariff for class P-2/TM with power limit above 200 kVA, Rp 1,5222.88 per kWh.
  • Electricity tariff for class P-3/TR, Rp 1,699.53 per kWh.
  • Electricity tariff for class L/TR, TM, TT, Rp 1,644.52 per kWh.

5. Calculate Electricity Costs

Finally, you can estimate the electricity bill by using the formula: Electricity Cost = Total Power (kWh) × Electricity Tariff (per kWh) Total Power (kWh) is the total power consumed in one month, calculated from the previous steps. Meanwhile, Electricity Tariff (per kWh) is the electricity tariff according to your house's tariff class.

Using this formula, you can estimate how much the electricity bill needs to be paid every month based on energy usage and applicable electricity tariffs.
