The difference between MCB and MCCB for electricity at home is apparently still not widely known. These two electrical components are often found in everyday life and have almost the same abbreviated name. 

Actually, both MCB and MCCB are Circuit Breaker type components, which are electrical safety devices designed to protect electrical circuits from damage due to excess current.

Definition and Uses of MCB

MCB or Miniature Circuit Breaker is an automatically operated electrical switch that aims to prevent damage due to excess current during a potential short circuit to protect against electrical interference and equipment failure.

MCB are widely used as isolation components in household, commercial, and industrial environments. 

The performance of an MCB is triggered by the flow of an electric current that exceeds the specified safe current. MCB are designed to protect against overloads and short-circuits that are detected differently using separate processes.

Definition and Uses of MCCB

Similar to MCB, MCCB or Molded Case Circuit Breaker is an electrical protection component used to protect electrical circuits from excessive current, which can cause overload or short circuit. 

With a current rating of up to 2500A, MCCBs can be used for various voltages and frequencies with adjustable trip settings. 

MCCB are used in large-scale electrical systems for the purpose of system isolation and protection.

Differences and Similarities Between MCB and MCCB

Mechanically, MCBs and MCCBs work in the same way and function, through the same installation mechanism. Both components are also categorized as low voltage circuit breakers with the IEC 947 standard.

However, there are some fundamental differentiating factors between the two.

MCB has a smaller current rating capacity, only up to 63 Amps with a smaller size, while MCCB has a current rating capacity of up to 1000 Amps with a larger size. 

Therefore, MCB are more suitable for tools with small ratings, while MCCB are used for heavier tools. 

In the MCB, the Trip Level or current threshold that passes through it cannot be adjusted, while the trip level on the MCCB can be adjusted by the user.

In short, MCCBs have a very similar function to MCBs, but have a higher capacity. MCBs are designed for low voltage circuits, while MCCBs can be used with higher voltages.

Between MCB and MCCB, Which One is Better to Install at Home?

Both MCB and MCCB  as electrical safety components were created with a purpose and function that has been arranged in such a way that good and bad are decided based on the conditions of the existing electrical system at home.

Although the MCCB has more features than the MCB, it does not mean that this component is better. One important consideration when installing an MCB or MCCB is the needs of the user.
